wow..hollywood united, whatever next
i mean watching the top flight mls teams is bad enough...
i watched the la galaxy v columbus game the other day and felt like throwing the tv out the window, it was more like watching a game show than a footy match
everytime beckham touched the ball all u could hear was 100s of screaming girls practically throwin their draws on the pitch,
whenever any1 scored silver n gold paper would float down from the top of the stadium like theyd just won who wants 2b a millionaire or something, i mean wtfs all that about
seriously the true meaning of the game is lost on these guys
im not havin a go at the usa guys on the rx cos i know u guys appreciate the game an know what ya talkin about,
but i do have a bad feeling that in the next 5-10yrs as the sport becomes mores popular in the us, the big american money will start flooding in and buying up all the big name talent an moving them to the mls...which would completely ruin the sport

do ya reckon im just being paranoid, or do u us guys think this my very well happen?
also how popular is it getting over in the states ? cos here in the uk we keep hearing little things from time 2 time,
like the f.a wanna extend the epl season so they can play extra games over in america, also seems like alot of rich american business men are startin 2 become more & more interested in buyin into our clubs

you're completely paranoid. American clubs do not have transfer fee money to pay European clubs...MLS is basically like the Russian league or Norway or Greece. It's a half decent league that big Euro clubs use to poach all the top talent from, not vice versa.

Guys like Reyna, Becks, Blanco, Angel, etc were not brought here on 40M transfer fees (all basically free except their salaries) and there is max 2 per team. The stadiums these teams play in don't hold many fans so the revenue will never be there to bring in top Euro talent in their prime. This will alway be a league of good young Concacaf talent with some Conmebol folks sprinkled in and an ex-great Euro footballer here and there. EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga will be the recipients of the top players and, when their careers have peaked, they'll be shipped back to MLS.

Except for Glazer I don't know of another American that owns an EPL team...may be wrong. Anyway, you prefer a Russian or a Thai to own EPL teams? makes sense

liverpool is owned by americans hicks & gillett, thats why subjects like this are so important in our city and are often spoken about. The bigger issue at the moment is that they are gonna destroy liverpool by putting us in so much debt that we wont be able 2 climb out of it...hicks has already spoken about how he can use the money from liverpool an put it into the texas rangers which he also owns....
however u do make a lot of good points rolltide n i hope it is all just paranoia..cheers for ur reply mate

Great Britain and the United States; two nations divided by an ocean and a wildly differing view of the manager's place in the hierarchy of a sports team or, if you prefer, sports franchise.
Over here, team managers enjoy great power and influence for as long as they occupy the office. The great ones become legends. They have stands named after them and gates erected in their honour; Shankly, Paisley, Busby, Stein and, when he retires no doubt, Ferguson.
It's different in the world of North American baseball, where the team manager is the guy who picks the team, executes the match-day tactics and, if he has a strong personality or a death wish, isn't scared to challenge the club's general manager or owners - aka. the real bosses - about the club's signing policies. Nothing more. In baseball, the great managers are no longer exalted, they are treated like day workers, to be summarily dismissed at the owner's whim, as Joe Torre, who brought great success to the New York Yankees, discovered to his cost at the end of the 2007 Major League Baseball season.
Once upon a time British football fans could afford to ignore this particular quirk of the American sports world. No longer. The recent influx of American money in British football has meant an influx of American attitudes, most notably at Liverpool, which has now been owned by the American pair of Tom Hicks and George Gillett for nine months.
Most people who have followed the Peyton Place saga that is modern day Anfield have been shocked at the way Hicks, in particular, has publicly treated Rafael Benítez. But those who know a little about baseball will recognise exactly what has been going on - Benítez, a manager who brought a Champions League trophy to Liverpool and who has both the potential and desire to follow Shankley and Paisley into the club's lexicon, is being treated with the same respect accorded to a baseball team manager, which is to say "very little".
Hicks's "reign" at Anfield has been notable mostly for the obfuscations of his slick PR machine so it would be remiss not to congratulate him for his straightforwardness on this occasion. But in his honesty he also reveals his ignorance of how football works in this country and his failure to realise the most successful clubs are those that place the greatest emphasis on continuity and loyalty. Liverpool fans can only hope that the rumours are true and that he and his cohort sell up and leave town before too much damage is done.

Derby (now in the Championship), Aston Villa and a piece of Arsenal (perhaps more soon) are also US owned.

You are paranoid. Americans are becoming more interested in futbol, but they are becoming more interested in international and European football, not the MLS. I get 4 channels that are all footie, all the time, including every EPL game, many La Liga games (maybe all of them too), Serie A, France, Germany, Holland, and god knows what other leagues. Euro, WC, CL, EPL, La Liga, Serie A are all getting more popular. Americans like the best and the MLS is anything but.

More thoughts later.

I'm not well-versed on this matter but I can only imagine that Americans becoming interested in futbol abroad and investing in foreign clubs are postive moves, for the most part. If it can serve as a stepping stone to getting soccer into a spot behind baseball and ahead of the NHL, then it's a great thing. It would probably have to be coupled with ESPN getting the rights to the EPL, as well.

Rolltide is right, you have nothing to worry about. MLS has a cap and 2 designated player restriction. Ultimately, these two factors, along with international perception and small attendance figures, will keep the MLS at their third tier level.

This sounds like one of the clubs I would buy. Maybe my soccer thread made him paranoid. I do not think I will be making a bid for Manchester United anytime soon.

I don't think that is the type of team that really has ownership per se. here is the wiki entry:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_United_F.C.

You might want to look into a USL Second Division team or USL Player Development League team. I don't know how much you are planning to spend, but from what I understand, the USL Player Development League costs about $50k to get the team into the league on an annual basis. Not sure about travel costs and operational matters. My wife's cousin plays for one of the teams around here which is where I got those numbers. From what he said, they don't get paid and some of the teams actually make the players play (which is why he decided to play for one of the local teams and not the other), his team's ownership picks of that $50k.

Unfortunately the US doesn't have a fully integrated pyramid system like Europe so I don't know if this level can be promoted or relegated.
